Impoundment Ceremony of Nam Mo 2 Hydropower Reservoir– A Significant Milestone in the Project Completion Process

On 10 January 2026, the Impoundment Ceremony for the Nam Mo 2 Hydropower Reservoir was successfully held, marking a critical transition to the finalization and operational preparation phase of the project.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Government and local authorities of the Lao PDR, state regulatory agencies, the Project Owner, SCI Group – the EPC Contractor, along with consultants, partners, and relevant subcontractors. This event demonstrates the support and commitment of various levels of government and sectors throughout the project implementation

Before the impoundment, the Project Management Board had completed all necessary legal documentation and technical requirements in accordance with regulations, as well as closely coordinated with local authorities to implement communication and notification programs for residents in the upstream and downstream areas, ensuring absolute safety during reservoir operation.
 
The Nam Mo 2 Hydropower Reservoir features a Normal Operating Level (NOL) of 1,305.0 m and a Minimum Operating Level (MOL) of 1,287.5 m, with total storage capacity of 80.03 million m3 and an active storage capacity of 67.93 million m3. All items of the headworks complex were constructed in strict accordance with the approved designs. The hydromechanical gate systems have successfully completed Dry Tests, satisfying all technical requirements and ensuring full eligibility for reservoir impoundment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Bui Chi Giang, representative of SCI Group, emphasized that the reservoir impoundment is a milestone of special significance. It is not only a technical achievement but also the result of serious, scientific, and persistent work. Furthermore, it serves as a testament to the effective and reliable cooperation between the Project Owner, the EPC Contractor, and all stakeholders, under the close guidance of the Government and local authorities of the Lao PDR.

The impoundment of the Nam Mo 2 Hydropower Reservoir is a crucial prerequisite for the early completion and planned operation of the plant. This will contribute to a stable power supply, fostering socio-economic development and strengthening regional energy cooperation.
