In early 2025, SCI Group, as the EPC Contractor, put the Nam Sam 3 Hydropower Plant Project (156 MW) in Lao PDR into commercial operation and officially handed over to the Employer.
The Nam Sam 3 Hydropower Plant project is built on the mainstream of the Nam Sam River, located in Houaphan province, northeast of Laos, 30km away from the Laos-Vietnam border to the upstream direction, invested by Nam Sam 3 Power Sole Limited Company - a member of Phongsubthavy Group. The project has a capacity of 156 MW including 01 main Dam constructed according to RCC roller compacted concrete technology, with a height of Hmax = 121.7m, a main tunnel with a length of 9.1km connected with a surge tank having a height of 225m and a 230kV substation.
In October 2019, the Nam Sam 3 Hydropower Plant Project was officially commenced. As one of the key projects of SCI Group, the project has always been in close touch with care and directed by the Board of Directors of SCI Group. The construction site is located outside Vietnam territory with harsh weather conditions and complicated terrain, traffic faces various difficulties, especially during the global outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, greatly affecting construction activities. Facing with these challenges, experts, engineers, and workers of SCI Group have been determined and made continuous efforts to complete the project on schedule, quality, and safety, affirming the brand of professional EPC Contractor, which is highly appreciated by the Employer, ministries, and departments of Laos.
All works have been carried out by the Acceptance Council in accordance with regulations; the 72-hour reliable operation of the 3 units was completed at 01:00 AM on February 5, 2025, officially putting Nam Sam 3 Hydropower Plant into commercial operation. Accordingly, SCI Group will synchronously and effectively implement technical solutions, conduct inspections, and closely monitor the operation of the generator units, ensuring the safe, stable, and continuous operation of Nam Sam 3 Hydropower Plant.
Putting the project into operation is not only providing a clean and stable energy source, contributing to ensuring energy security for the Northern region of Vietnam with an average electricity output of 626 million kWh/year, but also promoting local socio-economic development, and at the same time, strengthening international cooperation and developing good relations between the Governments, the people of Vietnam and Laos.
The success of the Nam Sam 3 Hydropower Project is a solid foundation for SCI Group to confidently complete further projects signed by SCI and implemented in Laos such as Nam Sam 3A (45MW), Nam Mo 1 (60MW), Nam Mo 2 (120MW) projects, affirming the capacity, prestige with partners in the implementation of renewable energy projects as the Contractor in the domestic and international markets.
